BREWSTER TODD

GUITAR, VOCALS - Watch Brewster play and see mojo in action. The emotion comes thru with gritty tone and a handmade style that is all Blues. As a singer he’s got a lowdown vibe, moody & rough, California meets Mississippi.  Brewster is well-known around the Bay Area as the longtime lead guitarist for The High Rollers, harpman Phil Berkowitz's great band.  Brewster is the blues animal who's gigged everyplace. A Marin boy, he got hooked on guitar seeing Jesse Fuller play a 12-string at a rent party. Comin’ up in a slew of good bands Brewster spent his bachelor years living on a sailboat at Fisherman’s Wharf, working as an editor by day and prowling San Francisco's blues scene by night axe in hand ready to chop wood. On a funky green Fender Strat or a big Joe Pass F-hole guitar, Brewster The Rooster is a very hot player and a very cool dude.

JB DAVIS

BASS, VOCALS - JB is all about the mix.  From Virginia, he's into country twang, rock & roll, Motown & bluesy soul. He was in the Bay Area jump blues & swing trio The Shieks of R&B and played with Kenny Blue Ray & The Hoorays. Early on as bassist in the house band at The Ambassador (“DC's Fillmore”) JB shared the stage with Canned Heat, John Mayall, The Youngbloods, Van Morrison, The Hollies, James Cotton and others. In Boston he was in the pedal steel-based country band Tex La Mountain. In Chicago he did his 40 hours then 40 more in the South Side’s blues bars.  Influences?  Howard Tate, Bossa Nova, Al Green, 3-minute singles, Mose Allison, Blue Note, Flying Burritos, Philly & Memphis Soul, Badfinger, Gene Clark, Gene Ammons, high lonesome harmony, early Beatle B-sides, Paul Desmond and Ron Wood on bass in the Jeff Beck Group.

DAVE KESSNER

HAMMOND B3, PIANO, VOCALS
 - Dave is The Pro, Mr. Funky Fingers who hears it all. Musicians call it “great ears”. Dave lays down the band’s greasy grits on B3 and classic barrelhouse on piano. He toured with Etta James, played with Graham Nash, wrote tunes with Bill Champlin and was a longtime member of Lydia Pense & Cold Blood. Warner Brothers and EMI have published his songs which are featured in films and TV commercials. In ‘68 Dave founded Prune Music in Berkeley, one of the first underground music stores in the US run by and for musicians. Dave is a recording & production guru, too. In the 70’s he owned Church Studios in San Anselmo where he recorded Boz Scaggs, Steve Miller, Jerry Garcia, The Sons of Champlin, Mary Wells and others. Dave is the man behind the new Brother Cat CD, “Out To Prowl”.

CHARTERMAN

DRUMS - Maybe the Bay Area's most musical drummer, Scott Charter found his niche at age seven dropping Mom’s violin lessons after he saw The Harlem Drum & Bugle Corps. At 14 he recorded tunes still getting airplay on Garage Bands of the 60s compilations. His folks nixed a Bob Hope USO Tour so he joined Andy Williams (yep!) to tour the US & Canada.  He's played Rock, Big Band, Jazz, Country, Orchestra & Dixieland but his heart is in The Blues. He's a positive presence, a force of nature.  Full of good cheer, Charterman powers the Brother Cat sound with mucho swing & maximum shuffle. Yes, he’s technically brilliant but man can he groove!  Listen to his snare and cymbal work - it pops, all bounce. Charterman is the heartbeat. He's also an accomplished visual artist. Scott's watercolors are on our Pix page.
